LOOK ABOVE
“Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things.” Colossians 3:2
There are so many things in this world competing for our attention.
The newest phone. The prettiest clothes. The next accomplishment. More followers. More recognition. More opportunities. The role we wanted. The approval of someone we admire. The desire to have what someone else has.
This can become a big issue when we begin looking to earthly things to give us something they were never created to give us: our identity, our peace, our worth, or our joy.
Earthly things are temporary. They change, break, fade, disappoint, and eventually get replaced by something newer. If our happiness depends on what we have, what we accomplish, or what other people think of us, our hearts will constantly be searching for the next thing.
Colossians 3:2 tells us to set our minds on things above. This is an intentional choice…
When our minds are fixed on Jesus, we remember what is eternal.
We remember that this life is temporary, but life with Jesus is eternal.
We remember that knowing Him is worth more than anything this world could offer us.
And slowly, something beautiful happens: our desires begin to change.
For a dancer, this can mean remembering that the goal isn't the best role, the perfect technique, the most beautiful costume, or the most attention. Those things can be wonderful gifts, but they cannot be the foundation of your joy!
Your greatest purpose is not to be seen by the world. Because the truth is, you will never be enough for a world that is constantly asking for more.
But that's okay.
Because Jesus already gave His life for YOU. He chose YOU. He calls you His own. Your worth was never meant to come from earthy things.
A heart fixed on earthly things will always find another reason to feel like it doesn't have enough. But a heart fixed on Jesus begins to recognize just how much it has already been given.
So when comparison creeps in, look above.
When you feel like you need more to be happy, look above.
When your emotions tell you something that doesn't align with God's truth, look above.
When the world tells you that your value is found in what you own, accomplish, look like, or achieve, LOOK ABOVE.
There is nothing wrong with enjoying the beautiful things God allows us to have.
But let's never confuse the gift with the Giver.
Our deepest joy will never be found in something we can buy, achieve, wear, hold, or earn.
Our deepest joy is found in Jesus.
Pause + Reflect
1) What earthly thing have I been allowing to take up too much space in my heart or mind?
2) Have I been looking to something temporary (success, possessions, approval, opportunities, or even dance) to give me something only Jesus can give?
A Prayer…
Jesus, help me set my mind on You. When the world tells me that I need more to be happy, remind me that my greatest treasure is already found in You. Teach me to enjoy the blessings You give me without allowing them to become the source of my identity or joy. When my feelings become loud, lead me back to what is true. Give me a grateful heart and eternal perspective. Let my desires become more like Yours, and help me use my life and my dancing not to gain the attention of the world, but to bring glory to You. Amen.
