Your Will Be Done

“Your kingdom come, Your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.” Matthew 6:10

As dancers, we understand what it means to want to grow.

We want stronger technique. Higher extensions. Cleaner turns. Better artistry. The list can go on & on...

There is something beautiful about working diligently toward the gifts God has given us. Although it's important to remember that Jesus reminds us that there is something even greater than asking God to help fulfill "our" plans:

Wanting His will more than our own.

When Jesus taught His disciples how to pray, He said:

“Your kingdom come, Your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.”

Those words are a prayer of surrender.

God’s will being done “on earth as it is in heaven” means that we are inviting His ways, His purposes, His goodness, and His Kingdom to become a reality in our lives right here right NOW.

Sometimes we can become so focused on asking God to bless what we want that we forget to ask Him what He wants.

“God, help me get this role.”

“God, let me get accepted.”

“God, help me become the dancer I want to be.”

But what if our prayer began to change...?

“Jesus, what do You want to do through my dancing?”

“How can I glorify You in this studio, in this rehearsal, in this season?”

“Your will, Jesus... not mine.”

That kind of prayer requires trust.

Because sometimes God's will may look exactly like what we hoped for. Other times, He may redirect us completely. A door may open. A door may close. The role may come or it may go to someone else. The opportunity we prayed for may happen differently than we imagined.

But when our hearts, eyes, and desires are fixed on Jesus above everything else, we begin to understand something beautiful:

The greatest thing God can give us is not the life we imagined. It is more of Himself.

Our first desire becomes knowing Jesus, then becoming more like Jesus, and from there, we can trust Him with everything else.

This doesn't mean we stop working hard. A dancer still goes to class, practices, strengthens, learns, grows, and pursues excellence. But growth is no longer our god.

Jesus is.

We can hold our dreams with open hands and say:

Lord, I will work faithfully with what You have given me, but I trust You with where it takes me.

The world may tell you to build your own life. Jesus teaches us to build His Kingdom.

Pause & Reflect

  1. When you think about your future as a dancer, do you spend more time asking God to fulfill your plans or asking Him what His plans might be?

  2. What is one way you can bring Gods will on earth this week?

Prayer

Jesus,

Your Kingdom come, and Your will be done in my life on earth as it is in Heaven.

Thank You for the gifts, dreams, and desires You have placed within me. Help me work hard and grow in the gifts You have given me, but never allow those things to become more important than You.

Before I desire the role, the recognition, or the next level, teach my heart to desire You.

Let my eyes stay fixed on You. Let my heart grow closer to You. Let my dancing become something You can use for Your glory.

When Your plans look different from mine, help me trust You. When doors open, keep me humble. When doors close, keep me faithful.

May Your will be greater than mine. Your name greater than mine.

In Jesus’ name,
Amen.
